This is a Charcoal Fire Pit used in making Iron.  Back in the early day’s of making Iron, this Pit was loaded with wood and burned 24 hrs. a day.  The “Fire Tender” had a small shack just to the left of the Image.  Fire had to be tended at all times.  Once a year, the Pit is started just to show how it was done.

HOPEWELL IRON VILLAGE is listed on the Pennsylvania National Historical Registry.  The Village is open to the general public for Tours on the Iron making in the early 18th Century.
